How to Renew Your Ontario Health Card
Last reviewed 2026-10-14
Most photo health cards in Ontario must be renewed every five years, usually around your birthday. Many people can renew online; others must visit ServiceOntario.
Renew online
- Go to ServiceOntario's health card renewal page.
- You'll usually need your current card, an Ontario driver's licence or photo card, and an email address.
- Online renewal isn't available for everyone — for example if your photo needs updating.
Renew in person
- Visit a ServiceOntario centre; booking ahead can reduce wait times.
- Bring proof of citizenship or immigration status, proof of Ontario residency and identity documents.
- A new photo and signature are taken at the counter.
If your card expired
Renew as soon as possible. Your OHIP coverage normally continues as long as you're still eligible, but clinics and pharmacies may ask for a valid card. Programs like OHIP+ and ODB also rely on it.
Red and white card
Old red-and-white cards are being phased out. If you still have one, you'll need to switch to a photo card in person.
